Day Twelve - Delos & Mykonos, Greece - Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Today we docked in Mykonos.  Not far from Mykonos lays Delos, “The Island of Light”.  Our excursion today was to Delos: Birthplace of Artemis & Apollo.  According to mythology, Zeus fell in love with a beautiful Titaness named Leto, but when his wife discovered his infidelity, she forbade Mother Earth to give Leto refuge.  Lonely and pregnant, Leto wandered the earth until the island appeared amid the waves so that she would have a place to give birth to twins: Artemis, goddess of the hunt and virginity and Apollo, the god of truth and light.

After we reached the island of Delos by chartered boat or Tour Guide  took us through the ruin’s explaining what we were seeing.  Our guide was not only a licensed Tour Guide she was also an archeologist.  She took us all through the ruins explaining the entire layout and what each of the areas were in this ancient city. Among the ruins is the Avenue of the Lions were replicas (the originals are in the Museum on the island out of the elements) of the 7th century Naxian marble beasts crouch in silent vigilance at the sacred lake where Leto gave birth.

Beyond, a path leads to Mt Kynthos, where Zeus observed the event.  We were then given free time to explore the Museum on the island.

We took the boat back to Mykonos.  Back in Mykonos it was hot, humid and windy, really windy.  High today was 86 degrees with 67% humidity and 34 mile an hour winds.  After walking around Delos for a couple of hours we needed a little cool refreshment. We found a little gelato/ice cream shop and sat and enjoyed a yummy gelato.  We then explored the old town of Mykonos.  It’s winding streets of shops, restaurants, houses and bars.

The heat and wind began to be unbearable and we decided to head back to the ship. My hair and face were pretty windblown and sunburned.  This vacation has not been kind to either my hair or face.
I relaxed for awhile in the cabin before we headed to the Main Dining room for dinner.  Then a stroll around the ship to listen to the entertainment in the ships lounges.  There’s nothing spectacular in the way of entertainment on this ship.  That’s the problem of having such incredibly talented friends no one else measures up.

Back to the Cabin for the night.  Our second towel animal of the trip.

Goodnight!
